Trees - Planting

  • Dig a hole 5 times the size of the dirt ball of the tree, and fill the hole in with a good soil. Do not go deeper than the dirt ball. Put the tree in a little above grade because it will settle , and you do not want water to sit around the tree.
  • Cut the roots (do not separate them or you will break the roots) if the roots are root bound.
  • Mulch the tree, but do not let the mulch touch the tree.
Only stake a tree if you have to. They must establish themselves or when you take off the stake, they can break. Stake at the lowest part that you can.

IDEAL SOIL FOR A TREE

25% water, 50% clay, sand, etc. and 25% air

MOVING A TREE

If you want to move a tree, wait until two weeks after the first frost. Late December, January or February.

STEPS TO INSURE SURVIVAL OF TRANSPLANTS AND CONTINUAL PLANT GROWTH

  • Select a healthy tree that is adapted to the area.
  • Dig a hole to the same depth as the tree was originally planted. The hole can be larger in diameter but never deeper.
  • When filling the hole, place the soil that was taken from the hole back around the roots.
